News from the Lewistown Art Center
As of August 2023, our Board has reached the difficult decision to put the Lewistown Art Center on hiatus. While our facility is closed, and our staff is downsized, we are not going away! Our Board is working with external consultants and local professionals to make a sustainable, long-term plan for the Lewistown Art Center. While this may look different, our mission is as important as ever: To Promote and Provide Engaged Access to the Arts, Arts Education, and Cultural Events in Central Montana.
While we’re on hiatus, we’re also:
· Offering after-school art in collaboration with Highland Park, Garfield, and Lewis & Clark Schools.
· Offering curriculum-compliant “art crates” to rural, colony, and home school students and instructors.
· Offering quarterly exhibitions of regional artists in the Central Montana Medical Center Clinic Hallway.

The Annual Chokecherry Culinary Contest will be held on Saturday, September 9th during the Chokecherry Festival at the Lewistown Art Center! The Chokecherry Culinary Contest is your opportunity to get creative with this iconic berry and its signature sour taste! There are many categories for entry including: Appetizer, Sauce/Salad Dressing, Main Dish, Jelly, Syrup, Cake, Cupcakes, Cookies, Pie, Other Dessert, Yeast Breads, Quick Breads, Alcoholic Beverage, Non-Alcoholic Beverage, Miscellaneous, Non-Food Product, Youth (12 and Under), and Commercial Product. To enter, bring your homemade item (must contain chokecherry!) to the Lewistown Art Center on Saturday, September 9th between 8 and 10 am. Judging will take place between 10 and 11:30am, and public sampling begins at noon! Entrants must bring their recipe (except for entrants in the Commercial Product Category) and at least a dozen servings. Special awards will be given for Best Presentation and Best of Show. Dishes can be picked up after 2 pm.
The LAC is still accepting and welcoming membership! We continue to offer high quality programming while taking a temporary hiatus at our Main Street facility. Members still receive the first updates about the LAC, 10% off classes at the Ken Edwards Memorial Ceramic Center, and North American Reciprocal Museum Association member benefits. Annual memberships last 12 months from the time of purchase, and monthly-memberships proceed until a member "opts out" by emailing the LAC Board at lewistownartcenterboard@gmail.com. We encourage you to join or increase your membership to support the continuation of arts and culture in Central Montana!
The Lewistown Art Center’s exhibit in the Margie Wilkins Gallery for the month of August is Muse and Myth, a Steven R. Hughes and Cassie Stone Exhibit! Come explore the various artwork in forms of sculpture, to assemblage, and everything in between! The Gallery is open to the public, and all are welcome. Join us for the opening reception August 4th, 5-7pm.
Now accepting donations for our Out of the Closet Sidewalk Sale!
Do you have old artwork or art supplies just waiting to be rehomed? Make a tax-deductible donation to the LAC for our Out of the Closet Sidewalk Sale, August 18th, 4-8pm during Hot Summer Nights in downtown Lewistown! You can drop off donations Tues-Sat 10am-5pm any day before the sale date. We are seeking donations such as art supplies, artwork, frames, and small furniture. Clear out the clutter in your closet and bring it down to the LAC!
Art Education Crates for Rural Schools
The LAC received funding from the State of Montana’s Cultural Trust, an allocation of funding from coal taxes that the state sets aside for cultural programming, to create remote art “crates” for rural, colony, and home school kids! These crates contain lesson plans and supplies for art activities for three age groups, 2-6 years, 6-12, and 12 and up! These lesson plans were created to be curriculum-compliant with Montana Education Standards and contain instructions, interpretive materials, and supplies for classes of any size in Central Montana. These will be ready by October 1st. Crates themes are Nature Journaling, Bookmaking, or Playing with Light and Shadow.

Central Montana “Wild Clay” Ceramics
The Art Center is proud to celebrate Lewistown’s rich history of locally sourced clay products with our line of Wild Clay Ceramics! These sturdy cups are handmade from local clay, harvested from the high-quality natural soil deposits found in Central Montana. The cups are slip-cast and finished with a glaze coat that lets the natural red color variations radiate through.
